FIRST ARMENIAN BANK NOTES ISSUE: Issued from August 1919 until December 1920.
These checks were designed to be a provisional issue, to be substituted by bank notes within three
months; but this failed to occur. The circulation of these checks lasted longer than planned.
Theory: Since 50-, 100- and 250-Ruble bank notes were entrusted to be printed in London and, as
their arrival was delayed, the provisional checks circulated, together with Czar Rubles, Duma
currency and Transcaucasian bonds, with the highest face value of 250 Rubles. It’s therefore natural
that the first provisional checks had a nominal value of 500 Rubles. The color used in this first
Armenian bank note has nothing to do with the colors that had been used in the Czar’s bank notes
(See Vol. 1 page 9). On their obverse, series “A” is followed by a serial number printed in black and
225
a striped space (see detail) that was possibly designed to
provide each bank note with an individual number. However, due to inflation in Armenia, it was
impossible to carry out this process. The series continued to be printed in black (in the first series) up
to series A14; but from series A15 onwards, the series began to be printed in red (even face value),
but the numbers were printed behind # which face value was
written in ornamental numbers, to series A30. After this, the series identifiers on the bank notes were
again printed in black. A total of 178 series are known. The
numbers identified below increment by two and are always even (series A19 n° 018 and onward were
observed). The two series of 500-Ruble bank notes with .. must be a printing error since it has been
proved that at least one series exists with both letters A and ...
Second bank note This issue should be 100 Rubles as it has
series ... Series .. 1 n. 014. The first series had black numbers without ornaments, and from series ..
15 n. 042 to .. 65 series n. 00178, the ornamented numeral can be found.
Error . Error B 57 n. 0126, followed by series ...
Third bank note This should be 1000 Rubles with the letter
B, and the first series should have been B 1 n. 0050.
This issue has been observed up to series n. B 30. Curiously, from series n. 31 on, the bank notes
started to be assigned with letter .. instead of B. This didn’t
change until n. .. 93 n. 00234 (probably because no-more-100-Rubles bank notes with series .. were
printed, which might as well explain why these bank notes were printed after July, 1920). There are
also series H bank notes. H 33 n. 002 to H 35 n. 006.
Fourth bank note This should be 250 Rubles series ... The
first series could be .. 1 n. 0080. From series .. 15 n. 108 to .. 29 n.136, bank notes series and
numbers were printed in blue. From series .. 30 n. 40 the bank
notes series and numbers were printed in black, this has been observed up to series .. 131 n. 0244.
Fifth bank note It should be 50 Rubles series .. (series .. 30 n.
040 to .. 54 n. 088 have been observed). It is worth mentioning that series .. 21 n. 0144 has a four
digit number although it is lower valued than the following ones. It is also useful to point out that
there were 50-Ruble bank notes with series .., but, there were also 25 Rubles bank notes with series
.., which led to 50–Ruble notes with .. series ceasing to circulate and being replaced with .. series
notes.
226
Sixth bank note In the beginning, 25 Ruble notes with
letter .. had its cipher in the center (.. 0114). Series .. 15 n. 0120 to .. 54 n. 0198 have been
observed.
Seventh bank note 10 Rubles with letter
?. Series

Eighth bank note 5 Rubles with letter ... Series .. 1 n. 012
to .. 12 n. 034.

032.
Error series K 10 n. 011. This is the only series K bank note
with final odd numeration. Error series A 13 n° 007.
Tenth bank note 10 Rubles simplified series M with text in
Armenian and uniface. Kardakoff points out that these bank notes were printed between July and
August 1920. Series M 1 n. 100 to M 8 n. 114.
Eleventh bank note 25 Rubles (same comment as in
previous bank note) Series H 10 n. 100 to H 17 n.114.

To group bank notes in issues, legends on the obverse and reverse are going to be considered, as well
as signatures on the obverse. The different ways of writing numerals and reverses unprint are
catalogued as sub types (or varieties). Having noted these reservations, four check issues can be seen.
First issue: On its obverse, from left to right, the signatures of Minister-President Alexander
Khatisian and Finance Minister Grigor Djaghetian, with the date ‘November 15, 1919’ on the reverse
The first issue consists of the 5 Rubles series .. bank notes, the 10 Rubles series
? bank notes, the 25
Rubles series .. 1 to 14 notes, the 50 Rubles series .. 1 to 14, 100 Rubles series .. 1 to 14, 250
227
Rubles series .. 1 to 14, 500 Rubles series A 1 to 14 without serial numbers, and the 1000 Rubles
series B 1 to 14.
Second issue: Minister-President Alexander Khatisian’s signature appears in the same position as
the first issue but with greater size on larger format bank notes, followed by Finance Minister Sargis
Araratian’s signature. The date on the reverse is, November 15, 1919. Notes in this issue are: 25
Rubles series .. 15 to 30, 50 Rubles series .. 15 to 30, 100 Rubles without ornamental numbers from
series .. 15 to 30; 250 Rubles series .. 15 to 30 (in blue), 500 Rubles series A 15 to 30 (in red) and
1000 Rubles series B from 15 to 30.
Third issue: Alexander Khatisian’s signature is in the same position as the first issue but with
greater size on larger format bank notes, followed by Finance Minister Sargis Araratian’s signature.
The date on the reverse is, January 15, 1920.
This issue consists of 25 Rubles series .. 31 n. 0152, 50 Rubles series .. n. 41 n. 062, 100 Rubles
series .. 33 n. 078, 250 Rubles series .. 33 n. 046, 500 Rubles series A 32 n. 044, 1000 Rubles series
.. 31 n. 00110, 5000 Rubles series K 05 n. 002, 1000 Rubles series
? 10 n. 010.
Forth issue: Armenian phrases appear on upper corners. The signatures of Minister-President
Alexander Khatisian and Finance Minister Grigor Djaghetian are used. This series consists of the
abovementioned banknotes (i.e. Third Issue) except for the fact that they are a different size and
uniface. This issue includes the following values: 5 Rubles series P, 10 Rubles series M, 25 Rubles
series H, 100 Rubles series C, and 50 Rubles series T.
